gap-year

THE GAP YEAR

In Western countries there is this concept of ‘Gap Year’.  Students taking a year or two off to figure out what they want to do with their lives. Usually its between Primary school and High school or between High School and college. I was recently reading an interview of Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock for the uninitiated) where he said he took a gap year and travelled to India. He trekked across the Himalayas and no! he didn’t find Nirvana nor did he have that sudden epiphany that he would be an actor and a big Hollywood superstar one day. But the Read More …

RUSTY AND THE FINANCIAL LIFE CYCLES

Rusty never thought about life cycles in general let alone financial life cycle. He never could imagine that a person’s life could be divided into financial life cycles and that to having six stages. At first he thought it would be boring as hell but later he found these stages had pretty interesting names –  Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo and Foxtrot. The Alpha Stage: It is the stage where a person starts earning his living, presumably by doing a job, is not married. The Bravo Stage: It is the stage after getting married and having the first child. Read More …

RUSTY LEARNS ABOUT MONEY

People might say otherwise, but all our education is aimed at this one thing- how to earn money. But we were never taught how to manage money once we start earning it. We were taught to get a job, earn a salary, save. We were taught only one thing about money – that is to save. Rusty was thinking all this because Rusty was in deep trouble. He was in a well paying job but the problem with him was that he couldn’t do that one thing that was taught to him about money- to save. He hadn’t saved much Read More …

YEAR END & A NEW BEGINNING

OriginalInk.in was started by me in March ’13 with the dream of making it a portal one day. Well, it is being near to being a portal as having just me writing for it and just me as the only reader. During this time the site has changed as many times as I have changed my mind. I had started a short story writing section that was to run for a year but I myself pulled the plug on it. The idea was copied from another website. And all that while I talked about being ‘Original’. Whenever I had bouts Read More …

FOR A WORLD OF ADDA, COFFEE AND CHANGING THE WORLD

Being a Bengali, I have grown up idolising the intellectual atmosphere of Renaissance Bengal of the 50’s. Men clad in kurta, pajamas would gather in coffee shops,(famous amongst them being the Coffee House at College Street)  or tea stalls and engage in adda session of ideas. Ideas that would set a revolution, ideas that would change the world. But unfortunately people of my generation are busy running after materialistic goals  or staring at their cell phones reading stupid posts and stupider twits. Damn be revolutionary ideas. They can be all be found in Google. People no longer have time. I Read More …

The Magic Ring

This was his last exam, last but not the least. And like many others he is also scared of the math monster.  For others, the formulas lead to solution, but for him they only create problems. As if the squares, angles and points are made only to injure him. But he has got another big trouble. The more he is tensed, the more he feels sleepy. So with proper respect, he gently pushed the books aside to have a power nap, and a strong promise to himself to finish the algebra after waking up. But alas! The power nap is Read More …

4 STEP GUIDE TO A MORE PEACEFUL LIFE

There is so much stress on activity in the present times that we have almost lost the ability to become still, silent. It is as if we are worthless if we are doing nothing. Productivity is so over hyped that we often fail to ask the question what for? We simply follow the herd without ever thinking where it is heading; it might be heading towards committing mass suicide just as lemmings do. We do not bother to think. We simply do not value the time we spend with our own selves doing nothing. Just as the universe contains empty Read More …

ZEN AND THE ART OF PILLION RIDING

Left to me this piece would have never left the pages of my dairy. I am somebody who has an intrinsic distaste for ‘sharing’. But after almost about a year, I feel, I owe it to my friends and fellow trip mates. I did not do anything to contribute to the trip – I can’t ride a bike (hence the pillion!), I didn’t negotiate with people to get us cheap deals and I didn’t even click much photos. So this is my attempt at giving something back to the group (that went by the name ‘Ryd of My Life’ in Read More …

2 IMPORTANT LIFE LESSONS FROM THE SHAWSHANK REDEMTION

One often doesn’t want to go back to movies that have a twist in the end, once you get to know the twist. But “The Shawshank Redemption” is different. I have often gone back to the movie, looking for what I don’t know? And I have wondered why? What does the movie have that makes it so soothing to the soul? What makes it the highest rated movie in IMDb? Then, suddenly it struck me. The message the movie gives is about hope. That is underlined by the makers of the film. But for me its more than hope.   Read More …

Facebook to WhatsApp – A Tale of Three Years

The final chapter “It was my mistake. I hate you”, was the last message received on WhatsApp. Then he blocked her. Though after every half an hour he kept going back to her profile, even he wondered why. By the second half hour most of her photos got deleted, the chat history of last three months too followed suit. Well, it was getting too smooth, had to turn dramatic somewhere down the line. He was thinking. The first call on the New Year’s eve 2010, the messages that streamed, the laughs shared, the childish fights, the drunken proposal; memories started Read More …
